Diamond Aircraft

Diamond Aircraft is an Austrian manufacturer ranking among the world's top three producers of piston aircraft. The company grew out of Hoffmann Flugzeugbau, founded in 1981; its headquarters and main plant operate in Wiener Neustadt near Vienna, with a second factory in London, Ontario. Since 2017 Diamond has been part of China's Wanfeng group, while keeping its Austrian engineering school and production.

Jet A-1 diesels: the decisive argument for the CIS

Diamond is the only major manufacturer to have built its entire line around aviation diesels of its own design: engine maker Austro Engine belongs to Diamond and works on the same Wiener Neustadt campus. The AE300 and AE330 diesels burn ordinary Jet A-1 — the fuel stocked at every major airport in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. In a region where Avgas 100LL supply is irregular, this removes piston aviation's main operational risk: a Diamond refuels wherever turboprops and jets do, and diesel burn runs 30–40% below comparable gasoline engines.

The line-up: from trainer to seven-seat twin

The range covers every step of personal and training aviation: the two-seat DA20, one of certified aviation's cheapest trainers; the four-seat diesel DA40 NG, a flight-school favorite burning about 19 l/h; the DA42-VI twin, a standard for multi-engine training and surveillance work; the flagship five-seat DA50 RG with retractable gear; and the seven-seat DA62 — the class's family SUV, carrying five adults and two children on roughly 50 l/h of kerosene total. A line of its own is the electric eDA40, contending to become the first electric aircraft with full EASA and FAA certification.

Composites and safety

Every Diamond airframe is all-composite — free of metal fatigue life limits and corrosion. The line's safety record is among the best in piston aviation: a rigid safety-cell cabin, a wing with benign stall behavior and fuel tanks shielded by the spars. That blend of economics and accident statistics is why the world's largest flight academies, from Europe to China, standardize on Diamond.
